The GIMP
I was inspired to paint this after visiting Mononoke Hime no Mori in Japan, the same forest that inspired Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke. It was painted entirely in The GIMP using a tablet. There are 174 layers.

The GIMP, Blender
This is a painting I did for my GNOME desktop background. I used Blender to model the ground with no textures just to get the perspective. The rest was painted in The GIMP. The textures are mostly procedural.
